Overview of Bachelor of Dental Surgery in SEGi UNIVERSITY Malaysia
Dentistry is a highly respected professional career which demands high standards of care and skills, as well as an aptitude for dealing with people.
The SEGi University Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) is a five-year programme that aims to produce competent, caring and knowledgeable dental practitioners. Students are exposed to early patient contact and clinical training, with an emphasis on the recognition and prevention of oral diseases. The dynamic curriculum is delivered within a problem-based learning approach,with an emphasis on contextual learning of relevant scientific information. The curriculum also reflects the way in which students will be expected to identify and address clinical problems, placing a higher emphasis on delivery through engagement with the students.
Programme Structure of Bachelor of Dental Surgery in SEGi UNIVERSITY Malaysia
Programme Structure:
The 5-year BDS programme in SEGi University comprises an integrated curriculum, emphasising the oral cavity and related structures, the individual and the community in relation to oral health and morbidity. In the first two (2) years, students learn basic medical and oral sciences with early clinical exposure (the Preclinical Phase) followed by three (3) years of clinical training (Clinical Phase) at SEGi University, and in hospitals approved by the Ministry of Health Malaysia.
The curriculum is organised around seven (7) courses covering major thrust areas in dentistry:

2. Oral Cavity in Health & Disease (Basic Oral Sciences)
3. Human Disease
4. Oral Diagnostic Sciences

Entry Requirement of Bachelor of Dental Surgery in SEGi UNIVERSITY Malaysia
Entry Requirement:
All applicants who enter a matriculation, foundation or pre-medical programme, except those with a degree qualification in arts of humanities, shall have passed and attained a minimum of the following at School Certificate or its equivalent:
- Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) with 5 Bs each in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics (or Additional Mathematics) and another subject, OR
- General Certificate of Education Ordinary “O-Levels” with 5 Bs each in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics (or Additional Mathematics) and another subject.
- Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) with B4 each in 4 subjects in Biology, Chemistry, Physics (or Mathematics or Additional Mathematics), and in another subject
All applicants, except those with a degree qualification in the arts or humanities, shall have passed and attained a minimum of the following at:
a. Higher School Certificate or its equivalent:
- Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM); grades BBB, ABC or AAC in Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics, OR
- GCE A-Levels; grades BBB, ABC or AAC in Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics, OR
- Matriculation, Foundation in Science, Pre-Medical Course; CGPA 3.0 (out of 4) in 3 subjects i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics, and provided the course in not less than 1 year in the same accredited institution and the minimum entry qualification is 5 Bs each in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics (or Additional Mathematics) and another subject at School Certificate level or its equivalent, OR
- United Education Certificate (UEC); B4 each in 5 subjects i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Additional Mathematics, OR
- Monash University Foundation Pre-University Program (MUFY), University of New South Wales (UNSW) Foundation, Western Australia Curriculum Council, HSC Sydney Australia, Trinity College Foundation Studies, Australian Universities Foundation Programmes, South Australian Matriculation (SAM) Victorian Certificate of Education Australia Year 12, Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT); aggregate or average of 80% or the equivalent of B in 3 subjects i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics; OR
- National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) level 3 or New Zealand Bursary, average of 80% in any 3 subjects i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics, OR
- Canadian Pre-University (CPU) or Canadian International Matriculation Program (CIMP/Canadian Grade 12/13) or Ontario Secondary School Diploma Grade 12; average of 80% in any 3 subjects i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics, OR
- Indian Pre-University; average 70% in any 3 subjects i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics, OR
- International Baccalaureate; 30 points with a minimum of 2 science subjects or Mathematics at Higher Level (HL) and 1 science subject at Standard Level and attained a minimum score of 4 each in Biology, Chemistry, Physics (or Mathematics).
OR
b. Diploma Level
- Diploma in Health Science; CGPA 3.5 (out of 4), and provided the course is not less than 5 semesters or 2 ½ years in the same accredited institution and the minimum entry qualification is 2 Bs in Biology, Chemistry or Physics and 3 credits each in English, Mathematics (or Additional Mathematics) and another subject at School Certificate Level or its equivalent.
OR
c. Degree Level:
- Degree in Medical Sciences; CGPA 3.3 (out of 4) in a 5-year undergraduate medical programme, OR
- Degree in Medical Sciences; CGPA 3.5 (out of 4) in a 4-year graduate entry medical programme, OR
- Degree in Medical Sciences; CGPA 3.5 (out of 4) in a 5-year undergraduate entry medical programme, OR
- Degree in the Arts of Humanities; CGPA 4.0 (out of 4) in a 4-year graduate medical programme
Health requirements
Prior to admission, all short-listed applicants are required to undergo a medical checkup to ensure they are free from communicable diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis; and to undergo immunisation against Hepatitis B.
