A Diploma in Nursing in Malaysia is a professional, competency-based programme designed to train students to become Registered Nurses (RNs) who can deliver safe and effective nursing care in hospitals and community healthcare settings. This diploma is the minimum qualification required to become a licensed nurse in Malaysia. The programme is accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and regulated by the Malaysian Nursing Board (MNB), which ensures all graduates meet national professional standards.
The diploma emphasises patient care skills, clinical judgment, communication, medical ethics, and nursing professionalism. Core modules include Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Medical-Surgical Nursing, Paediatric Nursing, Obstetric & Gynaecology Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Gerontology (Elderly Care), Community Health Nursing, and Emergency & Critical Care Nursing. Students undergo both classroom learning and extensive clinical placements in hospitals, where they gain hands-on experience in patient management, medication administration, wound care, health monitoring, teamwork with doctors and allied health professionals, and emergency response procedures.
Clinical practicum hours are mandatory and supervised by qualified nursing educators and clinical instructors. Students must demonstrate competence in basic nursing procedures such as vital signs monitoring, patient hygiene care, intravenous therapy assistance, infection control techniques, and nursing documentation.
Upon completing the diploma and clinical training, graduates are required to pass the Malaysian Nursing Board Licensing Examination to become Registered Nurses. This diploma prepares individuals for employment across healthcare sectors and serves as the foundation to pursue a Bachelor’s degree and specialised nursing fields.
