A Certificate in Nursing Assistant / Health Care Assistant in Malaysia is a foundational training programme designed to prepare individuals to work as support personnel under the supervision of Registered Nurses (RNs) and medical professionals. This programme is suitable for students who want to join the healthcare sector without pursuing a full nursing degree. While these assistants do not provide independent clinical care or perform advanced nursing procedures, they play an essential role in patient support services and hospital operations.
The programme teaches basic patient care, hygiene assistance, communication skills, environmental safety, vital signs monitoring, patient mobility and positioning, basic first aid, nutrition assistance, documentation, and infection control practices. Students learn how to assist nurses during patient procedures, handle patients with compassion, maintain clinical cleanliness, and promote patient comfort.
The curriculum includes practical clinical exposure in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and community healthcare centres. Under supervision, students practice patient bathing and grooming, assisting with feeding, basic wound dressing assistance, preparing hospital beds, measuring temperature and blood pressure, and supporting patients with limited mobility. Ethical principles, patient confidentiality, and teamwork in clinical environments are emphasised throughout the programme.
Graduates do not qualify as Registered Nurses and cannot perform tasks requiring clinical judgment. However, they can build careers as support staff in healthcare facilities or continue their education to pursue a Diploma in Nursing if they meet entry criteria. This certificate opens an accessible entry point for individuals seeking early employment in Malaysia’s growing healthcare industry.
