What is the TOEFL Test?

It is one of the most popular English proficiency exams accepted at American and Canadian Universities and schools abroad. It tests International students of their communication skills which include written, spoken, reading and listening English. eligibility ETS  (Educational Testing Service) is the conducting body of the TOEFL Test which is responsible for setting the TOEFL exams including the setting of the TOEFL questions, conducting the test, and sending each examinee their scorecard. Students who want to pursue further education in a foreign land can choose from multiple TOEFL Test Dates available around the year.

What is the Eligibility to appear for TOEFL?

This test is entirely given by the students who wish to get admission to universities, colleges or educational institutions of English Speaking countries. There are no specific eligibility criteria to give this exam. Anyone who has passed out of high school or equivalent can give this exam. You should also have a valid Passport to present on the day of the exam. English speaking countries like the USA and Canada require students to prove their language proficiency for getting admission to their educational institutions.

TOEFL Registration

It is a fairly simple process to register for this test. Candidates can choose their own date and time to give the exam. The only part the students need to know if in case they want to reappear for the exam then they can only do it after 12 days of the first attempt and they are allowed only 5 attempts in a year.

STEPS FOR REGISTRATION:

  1. Candidates are required to create a new account or log in to an already existing account on the official website.
  2. Candidates would be then required to carefully flesh out their profile. They would be required to provide additional information that could come in handy during the time of their admission or sending of scores.
  3.  Candidates would then be required to select their TOEFL Exam Date that is most convenient to them as test-takers. Here is a screenshot of the days that candidates can choose to appear for the TOEFL Exam for the months of November and December 2019. 
  4. Candidates can then select a Test Centre that is convenient to them.
  5. Once the candidate has opted for his choice of Test Date and Exam Centre he would be redirected to the exam payment gateway page. Candidates would be required to pay the TOEFL Examination fee as mentioned. Candidates should be careful to check the details of the examination credentials here. Once the payment is made, changes made henceforth would incur a price.
  6. Once the payment has been made. Candidates can take a print out of the acknowledgement receipt. They would also have access to the same on their account dashboard.

 Go through the registration form before you call. Spell your name correctly and exactly as it appears on your passport. Call the Regional Registration Center on this number – 91-124-4147700. Pay with credit/debit cards as directed. Registration closes seven days before your test date.

By mail : 

Download and print the registration form. Then fill out the form. Spell your name exactly as it appears on the identification you will bring on the test day. Send the form with your payment to the address on the form or to the Gurgaon centre address, mentioned above. Forms must be received at least four weeks before your test date.

TOEFL Exam Pattern

Like the IELTS even TOEFL has four sections where a candidate can score, that is Reading, Writing, Spoken and Listening Skills. The total score will be covered in these categories. It is advisable that the candidates should practice as much as they can to get the best score report. As soon as the TOEFL results are declared, the ETS sends the official score reports directly to the institutions or the university the student has selected.

There are more than 130 countries and over 10,000 Universities who accept the scores. Destinations like the USA, Canada, UK and Australia welcome the TOEFL Scores.

Exam day tips for TOEFL

It is always better to prepare for any exam way before the D Day. You are expected to be at the testing centre at least 30 minutes prior to the exam. One needs to know before entering the test centre there are screening so that no candidate can cheat while the exams are on.

What to bring 

You just need to carry your registration number/ ID Card , Valid Passport for Indian Students. 

Since TOEFL is an online based exam, you are not required to get any writing material. Moreover, everything is provided by the centre. 

Yes, you can carry a bottle of water and snack, in case needed during your break between exams. 

During the Test

You are provided with all the writing materials required for taking notes while listening and speaking section of your test. You are also given a headphone with an attached microphone which you will need to record while giving answers. 

You can also leave as soon as you complete the entire exam. 

Important TIPS to remember while appearing for TOEFL 

  1.  If you have studied in English since childhood then you do not have to stress about performing well. 
  2. Before starting any section of your test, make sure to calm your nerves down. 
  3. Studying anytime during your D Day will only stress you more. Avoid doing it. 
  4. Practice as much as you can prior to the test. 
  5. Almost all the centres are Air Conditioned so wear your clothes according to the weather. Make sure to wear comfortable clothing to concentrate more on the exam. 
  6. You get only 20 minutes in your written exam hence make sure to proofread your essay before submitting.
  7. During the Speaking and Listening exam you will need to concentrate more cause you will need to understand and speak accordingly also the headphones provided to you will not be noise cancelling once, so concentrating is the key point here. 
  8. The sensor in the microphone will be very sensitive hence you are advised not to scream while answering or recording. Your natural tone should do the job !
  9. Your speaking skill should be impeccable so that you do not hesitate while recording the answers. If you think you need to calm down then take a break for a couple of seconds and then re-record. 

 

What is the syllabus for the TOEFL exam?

It is mainly to test the candidates reading, writing , speaking and listening skills. The Syllabus and patterns are designed to assess a candidate's proficiency in the English Language. 


Let’s Elaborate a bit : 

Reading Comprehension

This section will ask you to read 3-5 passages and answer 12-14 questions per passage. You will be scored based on how good you have understood the passage and how well you have answered. 

Time Given:- 54-72 Minutes

Listening Comprehension

You will be able to hear short and long conversations. After which you will be asked one question with multiple choices of answers will be given in the SHORT CONVERSATION, you will have to choose the answer. In long conversations you will be asked multiple questions based on the conversation. 

Question type: a) 3–4 lectures (3-5 minutes long, about 500-800 words), 6 questions each; About 30

questions in total

b) 2–3 conversations (about 3 minutes long, about 12-25 exchanges), 5 questions each; About 12 questions in total

Total no. of questions: 40+

Total time: 41–57 minutes

Speaking Section

The examiners are looking for highly intelligent and sustainable conversation with the candidates , hence, for you to get the best grade you need to be able to speak well and fulfill the demands of the task given by them. 

The three main factors in this section are as below : 

Speaking Questions covered in TOEFL Syllabus:

a) 1 independent task (prep time: 15 sec; response time: 45 sec)

b) 3 integrated tasks – Read/Listen/Speak (prep time: 30 sec; response time: 60 sec)

Total no. of questions: 4

Total time: 17 minutes

Writing Section

You will be given an essay to cover this section. Which you will be expected to productively complete. The better you comprehend the essay the better for you to score for this section. If your essay covers all the required to use the appropriate word choice with minimum no grammatical mistake. 

Writing Questions Covered in TOEFL Syllabus:

a) 1 integrated task – Read/Listen/Write (20 minutes) (reading time: 3 min; listening

time: 2 min; writing: 15 min)

b) 1 independent task (30 minutes)

Total no. of questions: 2

Total time: 50 minutes

How do I start preparing for TOEFL?

Two ways to prepare for the exam:

 

Self Study :- It is a good habit to study much prior to preparing for the exam at home. Self study or group study with friends appearing for the same is a good start. 

Coaching:- In coaching classes for preparing TOEFL exam will teach you any and every hidden point for the same, also they do suggest you books you can prepare from and they even take mock test by which you can expect the pattern of the TOEFL exam 

Where do you get the Study Material for TOEFL 

Many online and offline stores provide you with the best TOEFL practice guide. It also depends on the candidate's current English understanding level too. Beginner, expert and focusing only in vocabulary and grammar. It is best to get the precise information of the study material in order to get through with the TOEFL exam with flying colors. 

How you are scored at the TOEFL exam 

On an average the TOEFL score is around 90 Marks, it may vary from 85 to 95. Anything above 100 is considered to be the best TOEFL score.

TOEFL Results 

 

Finding TOEFL scores has been easier. After you have appeared for your test, it will take exactly 10 days for you to get your TOEFL Result Scores. You will be sent email information of the date the result will be declared so that you can view it online. Make sure you log in to your TOEFL account on the TOEFL website and click View scores
