Malaysia does not offer a standalone Master in Midwifery as a direct clinical pathway separate from nursing regulation. Instead, midwifery at postgraduate level is incorporated into Master of Nursing programmes, typically under the track of Maternal and Child Health, Midwifery Education, Women’s Health Nursing, or Advanced Clinical Nursing. These programmes are designed for Registered Midwives who already hold a Post Basic Midwifery qualification and wish to progress into advanced clinical, academic, management, or research roles.
A Master-level pathway enhances knowledge in maternal health policy, neonatal outcomes, reproductive health promotion, midwifery education, high-risk pregnancy assessment, breastfeeding strategies, mental health in motherhood, perinatal epidemiology, and evidence-based maternity practice. It differs from Post Basic Midwifery training in that it does not focus on basic delivery skills; instead, it deepens leadership, research competence, clinical decision-making, documentation standards, patient safety strategies, and advocacy in mother-baby healthcare systems.
Core modules usually include Advanced Maternal and Neonatal Nursing, Family and Reproductive Health, Childbirth Education, Women’s Health Promotion, Health Policy and Administration, Advanced Pharmacology, Clinical Decision Making, Research Methodology, and Nursing Education Strategies. Master students may choose between coursework, mixed mode (coursework + dissertation), or research mode depending on career goals.
Graduates from Master programmes often contribute to curriculum development, serve as nurse educators, manage maternity wards, lead community maternal initiatives, or pursue research influencing national health policies on maternal and neonatal care. This degree also allows progression to doctoral-level studies focusing on maternal health, perinatal mortality reduction strategies, and community midwifery improvement.
