The Post Basic / Advanced Diploma in Midwifery in Malaysia is a professional nursing qualification that prepares Registered Nurses (RNs) to provide specialised maternal and neonatal care during pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum recovery, and newborn health. This programme is regulated by the Malaysian Nursing Board (MNB) and is the only pathway that qualifies nurses to become Registered Midwives in Malaysia.
Midwifery training focuses on women’s reproductive health, normal and complicated deliveries, maternal and fetal assessment, neonatal care, antenatal and postnatal care, breastfeeding support, emergency obstetric procedures, and family planning services. Students learn how to perform and manage normal deliveries, recognise complications, provide emotional and psychological support, and collaborate with obstetricians, paediatricians, and maternity unit healthcare teams.
Core modules include Anatomy & Physiology of Pregnancy, Normal Labour & Delivery, High-Risk Pregnancy Management, Midwifery Pharmacology, Neonatal Assessment, Obstetric Emergencies, Postpartum Care, Lactation Management, Maternal Mental Health, and Midwifery Ethics & Law. Clinical practicum constitutes a major portion of the training and is conducted in maternity wards, labour rooms, postnatal wards, operating theatres, and neonatal units. Students are required to assist and conduct supervised deliveries as part of competency requirements.
Upon completion, graduates must register with the Malaysian Nursing Board as certified Registered Midwives. This qualification leads to career progression in maternity units and provides a pathway to advanced roles such as senior midwife, clinical instructor, nurse educator in maternity, and specialised maternal-child consultant.
