The Certificate in Midwifery in Malaysia is a foundational healthcare programme designed to introduce learners to the principles of maternal and newborn care. This course focuses on supporting women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period, while working under the supervision of qualified nurses, midwives, and medical professionals. It is suitable for individuals who are passionate about women’s health, community care, and healthcare services.
The programme provides essential knowledge in basic midwifery concepts, anatomy and physiology related to pregnancy and childbirth, antenatal and postnatal care, basic labour support, neonatal care, breastfeeding guidance, maternal nutrition, and infection prevention. Students also learn ethical practice, patient safety, communication skills, and emotional support for mothers and families.
Practical exposure is a key element of the course. Learners are trained in basic clinical settings or simulated labs to understand maternity ward procedures, hygiene standards, patient observation, record keeping, and support during routine maternal care. Emphasis is placed on professional conduct, cultural sensitivity, and compassionate care.
It is important to note that this certificate does not qualify graduates to practise as registered midwives. In Malaysia, professional midwifery practice requires recognised nursing and midwifery qualifications and registration with the relevant regulatory bodies. This certificate serves as a supportive or preparatory pathway toward further studies such as nursing, midwifery diplomas, or maternal and child health programmes.
Usually 6 months – 1 year, offered in full-time or part-time modes.
Tuition fees typically range from RM 3,000 – RM 10,000, depending on the institution, training facilities, and course duration.
