The Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), also known as Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) in some universities, is a professional degree that trains students to become licensed dentists in Malaysia. The programme is regulated by the Malaysian Dental Council (MDC) and accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) to ensure graduates meet strict clinical and ethical standards.
This 5-year programme combines foundational medical and dental sciences, extensive laboratory simulation, and progressive clinical training. In the first and second years, students learn anatomy, physiology, microbiology, oral biology, dental materials, pharmacology, biochemistry, pathology, and oral radiology. They are introduced to dental instruments, infection control, dental impressions, restorative materials, and oral diagnostic processes.
Clinical training begins gradually in supervised simulation clinics, then progresses to patient care at university dental hospitals. Students learn general dentistry, pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, prosthodontics, restorative dentistry, endodontics, oral maxillofacial surgery, periodontics, dental public health, and emergency oral care. The programme emphasizes diagnostics, treatment planning, preventive dentistry, patient communication, and hands-on operative skills.
Upon completion, graduates are required to complete compulsory government service and register with the Malaysian Dental Council before working independently. A BDS degree also provides opportunities to pursue specialties such as orthodontics, oral surgery, prosthodontics, or advanced research through postgraduate programmes.
