A Dental Surgery Assistant (DSA), also known as a Dental Assistant, is a trained support professional who assists dentists during dental procedures and manages patient care before, during, and after treatment. A DSA is not a dentist, but plays a vital role in ensuring efficient clinical workflow, patient safety, sterilization, and administrative support in dental clinics or hospitals.
The Certificate in Dental Surgery Assistant is a vocational programme designed to teach practical, hands-on skills needed in dental environments. Students learn dental instrument handling, chairside assisting techniques, dental anatomy basics, oral hygiene support, sterilization procedures, dental material handling, four-handed dentistry, digital dental record management, infection control, radiography assistance, and patient management skills. They also receive training in emergency preparedness, dental ethics, clinic safety, and dental charting.
The programme includes clinical postings in university dental clinics, private dental practices, or government facilities. Students observe and assist in procedures such as fillings, tooth extractions, scaling, root canal treatments, pediatric procedures, prosthodontics, orthodontics, and surgical setups.
DSA graduates are in demand due to increasing private clinics and public oral health services. This certificate allows students to join the workforce quickly, and with experience, they may upgrade to Dental Hygiene, Dental Therapy, or Dental Technology at diploma or degree level.
