Course Overview

The Diploma in Marine Engineering (DME) is ideal for students with strong abilities in Mathematics and Physics who are passionate about building a career at sea. This programme is designed to equip learners with the essential knowledge, technical understanding, and practical skills required to serve onboard merchant vessels with propulsion power of 750 kW and above, operating on near-coastal and foreign-going voyages. Graduates are trained to become certified watchkeeping engineering officers, capable of supporting safe and efficient ship operations. The course is aligned with the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) 2010 and relevant national regulations, ensuring compliance with international maritime standards. Students gain thorough training in marine machinery, electrical and electronic systems, control and operation of ships, and the care and safety of persons onboard. The programme spans 3.5 years across seven semesters, combining academic study, professional training, and shipboard experience. Upon successful completion, graduates are awarded a Diploma in Marine Engineering and a Certificate of Competency as Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch.

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for this programme ensure that applicants are academically qualified, medically fit, and proficient in English for maritime training. Foreign applicants or holders of a qualification equivalent to the UK GCE O’ Level must possess strong credits in Mathematics, a Science or Technical subject, three other subjects, and English. Candidates must be single and between 18 and 25 years of age. All applicants are required to be physically and mentally fit, certified by a medical practitioner approved by the Malaysia Marine Department. Male applicants must have a minimum height of 158 cm and weight of 48 kg, while female applicants must have a minimum height of 155 cm and weight of 42 kg, with a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. Applicants must not be colour blind and must have good eyesight with a visual acuity of 6/6, with optical aid not exceeding a power of 200 if used. A good command of Bahasa Malaysia and English, both written and spoken, is essential. English proficiency may be demonstrated through MUET (Band 3), IELTS or IELTS Online (5.0), TOEFL iBT (40), TOEFL Essential Online (7.5), PTE Academic or PTE Academic Online (47), Cambridge English or Linguaskill (154), or an approved Intensive English Programme (107).
