A Bachelor in Optometry & Vision Science in Malaysia is a professional undergraduate programme that trains students to diagnose vision problems, detect eye diseases, prescribe corrective lenses, manage visual disorders, and provide non-surgical eye care. Although it is not the same as clinical ophthalmology (eye surgery), this degree plays a crucial role in the eye healthcare system and acts as an academic pathway for students who may later pursue ophthalmology after MBBS.
The curriculum focuses on advanced ocular sciences including Ocular Anatomy & Physiology, Refraction & Visual Optics, Contact Lens Practice, Low Vision Rehabilitation, Binocular Vision, Orthoptics, Pediatric Optometry, Gerontology Vision Care, Basic Ocular Pharmacology, Ocular Pathology, and Vision Neuroscience. Students become proficient in eye examinations, vision therapy, slit-lamp assessments, retinal imaging, intraocular pressure testing (tonometry), visual field testing, and optical prescriptions.
Clinical training is a core component of this degree. Students work closely with ophthalmologists, optometrists, and technicians during hospital attachments, eye screening programmes, and optometry centre training. They learn how to co-manage glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, and other eye diseases alongside ophthalmology teams.
A Bachelor in Optometry & Vision Science in Malaysia prepares graduates to become licensed Optometrists, Vision Care Consultants, or specialists in pediatric or geriatric eye care. Students who aspire to become ophthalmologists can continue academically through MBBS/MD followed by Master of Ophthalmology, making this bachelor’s degree a strong foundation in eye sciences.
