A PhD in Health Studies in Malaysia focuses on research and academic advancement in health education, health promotion, community health systems, healthcare policy support, patient experience, behavioural health, and non-clinical elements of healthcare service delivery. Unlike clinical doctorates (such as MD or clinical PhD programmes), this PhD does not prepare graduates to diagnose or treat patients. Instead, it aims to develop scholars and leaders who can transform community health outcomes, healthcare support systems, health education strategies, public awareness, wellness programmes, and health policies.
Doctoral candidates focus on improving health literacy, community wellness, chronic disease prevention strategies, disability support services, healthcare workforce training, digital health communication, elderly care systems, school health programmes, lifestyle disease prevention, corporate wellness, health psychology interventions, and NGO-based health initiatives. Research also covers management and policy areas such as patient experience improvement, hospital support services, health equity, health economics (non-clinical applications), and public health programme evaluation.
Students complete a thesis, publish research articles, and may collaborate with ministries, health NGOs, hospitals, private health organisations, schools, elderly care sectors, technology-based health companies, and corporate wellness industries. A PhD in this field prepares graduates for leadership roles in research, education, health organisations, community health policy, and social wellness programmes.
