A Diploma in Health Studies (Clinical Support) in Malaysia prepares students to work in healthcare facilities as support personnel who assist doctors, nurses, therapists, and allied health professionals. This programme is purposely designed for students who want to work in hospitals but do not wish to pursue a clinical licence such as nursing, physiotherapy, medical laboratory science, or pharmacy.
The curriculum focuses on general health science knowledge, patient support services, basic anatomy, physiology, infection control, medical terminology, hospital operations, occupational safety, patient movement and communication, basic documentation and records management, health promotion, and ethical responsibilities in patient care. Some programmes offer modules in health psychology, community health, administrative assistance, and basic rehabilitation support.
Students are trained to handle patient comfort, assist with patient mobility, support hygiene needs, maintain healthcare equipment, assist in hospital administration processes, carry out basic therapeutic support (under supervision), and work according to clinical safety standards. Practical training may take place in private or government hospitals, aged care homes, rehabilitation centres, clinical outpatient facilities, and community health institutions.
Graduates are not authorised to perform clinical procedures independently (e.g., injections, medication administration). Their responsibility is to support licensed professionals within healthcare systems. This diploma creates a pathway to work immediately or continue to a bachelor’s degree for hospital administration, health management, support specialisations, or public health.
