Founded in 1923, the Department of English Language and Literature has earned recognition for excellence in China, counting among its faculty a host of notable scholars and alumni across a broad spectrum of both academic and professional disciplines such as Lin Yutang (writer and linguist), Yu Kwang-Chung (poet and translator) and Zhu Dezhen (CEO). Now we are supported by College of Foreign Languages and Cultures which comprises 5 departments. The department offer master’s degrees in 5 areas and doctoral degrees in 8 areas other than offering bachelor degree in English Language and Literature.
The graduates from the department are highly sought-after in the job market, and nearly 100% of graduates find employment within the first year after graduation. Employers include: Ministry of Foreign Affairs, municipal offices of foreign affairs, publishers, television networks, editorial offices, schools, tourism bureaus, publicity departments, customs offices, border inspection services, legal institutions, translation firms, banks, transnational corporations.
Our programme at Xiamen University Malaysia aims to arouse students’ curiosity and interest in language learning while cultivating their creativity, imagination, and cooperative ability, nurturing them into all-round developed whole-man. This programme provides solid background training on English language, literature, cultures and gives students room for self-development. Through experience in different kinds of activities such as journal writing, communicative presentation, discussion, seminar, speech and drama performance, it is hoped that students will become capable individuals with determination and contribute to society.
