Course Overview

Diploma in Ethnic Languages offered by the Faculty of Language and Communication (FBK), Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) is a newly introduced academic programme aimed at preserving and strengthening Malaysia’s rich linguistic and cultural heritage. This programme focuses on developing students’ knowledge and skills in local ethnic languages such as Iban, Kadazandusun, and other indigenous languages, in line with national efforts to safeguard linguistic diversity and cultural identity. The curriculum integrates language proficiency, basic linguistics, ethnic literature, intercultural communication, and the application of heritage values and national identity. Students are also exposed to the use of technology in language learning and the creation of communication materials suited to Malaysia’s multi-ethnic society. Serving as a strong foundation in language and communication studies, the programme also acts as a feeder pathway for students who wish to pursue the Bachelor of Education (Ethnic Languages) with Honours at UPSI. It plays a vital role in nurturing future contributors to the preservation and development of ethnic languages in Malaysia.
