Course Overview

This course equips students with the essential tools to manage spatial data and remotely sensed imagery in order to extract meaningful geospatial intelligence. It covers core areas such as geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing, supported by complementary topics including map design, habitat and landform mapping, data management, programming, drone mapping applications, photogrammetry, and visualisation. Learning is reinforced through practical case studies that address real-world, location-based challenges across disciplines such as biodiversity, agriculture, urban planning, mining, defence, and emergency services. The course assumes little to no prior knowledge, making it ideal for up-skillers, career changers, and professionals working with geospatial data who want to advance their capabilities. Graduates who successfully complete the certificate may progress to the graduate diploma and master’s programmes. The field of geospatial intelligence is experiencing strong global growth, driven by rising demand across industries such as oil and gas, mining, utilities, transportation, construction, and agriculture. Malaysia is recognised as a leading GIS market in the Asia-Pacific region, and job platforms consistently show high demand for roles such as GIS Analyst, GIS Developer, and Geospatial Data Collector. Throughout the course, students learn to apply geospatial technologies across different application areas, analyse spatial data to develop innovative solutions, select suitable datasets and software, engage with global spatial issues, work effectively across cultures, and collaborate with industry to solve real-world, location-based problems.

Entry Requirements

Applicants require a recognised Bachelor Degree in any discipline. A background in mathematics or statistics equivalent to first-year university level is recommended. Applicants without this background may be required to undertake appropriate preparatory units. Alternatively, applicants with more than three years’ demonstrable experience working in the fields of GIS or remote sensing may be considered for entry into the Graduate Certificate.
