A Diploma in South Asian Studies introduces students to the history, culture, language, religion, societies, and artistic traditions of the South Asian subcontinent. South Asia is one of the world’s most diverse and influential regions, home to powerful philosophical traditions, colonial and postcolonial histories, ancient civilizations, and major literary and artistic cultures. This diploma does not prepare students for technical jobs such as diplomacy or politics directly, but it builds foundational academic knowledge for cultural careers, humanities research, global studies, and region-based content industries.
Students learn about ancient and modern South Asian civilizations, major religions (Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism, Jainism), colonialism and independence movements, regional literature, social identities, caste, gender, diaspora, media and film studies, South Asian political culture, popular arts, festivals, and migrations. The curriculum blends history, anthropology, literature, linguistics, and religious studies to understand how South Asian societies function and change.
Learners also explore global connections—how South Asian migration has shaped culture in the Middle East, Europe, and Southeast Asia, especially in multicultural countries like Malaysia. Some programmes provide exposure to South Asian languages (Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Tamil, Sinhala, Nepali) at introductory levels. Internships may be offered in cultural institutions, media industries, NGOs, and education sectors.
This diploma prepares students for further study in humanities and regional studies, enabling them to engage with world cultures critically and professionally.
