Applied Geology is a major provider of skilled graduates to the Petroleum, Minerals, Groundwater and Environmental industries in Malaysia and overseas. It also undertakes high-impact, fundamental and applied research across a range of disciplines. The Department’s aim is to inspire students to gain the academic and practical skills that they will need for future employment.

This stream combines studies of sedimentary basins and petroleum geology with aspects of geophysics and petroleum engineering related to the evaluation, development and exploitation of oil and gas resources.

The Petroleum Geology Project and Honours Dissertation develops a student’s core research skills including experimental/theoretical/field-based studies, data collection and analysis, critical scientific analysis and reporting. The completion of the project demonstrates to potential employers an ability to work on one’s own, and plan and carry out a complex body of work within defined deadlines. Through the project, students are getting opportunities to publish their research work in peer-reviewed journals/books and International research collaboration.
